Reus general cemetery was opened in the year 1870, and was built in the Neoclassical style. During its existence works of funerary art have been created, so that it now has an exceptional collection of pieces.

It still serves the town today, keeping alive both its historic part and the successive extensions creating space for its future development.

Graves

The cemetery holds a total of 13,390 graves. There are four basic types of grave: pantheons, chapels, tombs and niches.

Columbaria

This service, new at Reus cemetery, allows urns containing ashes to be placed in the cemetery.

Tomb for Ashes

2006 saw the introduction of a new free service, the tomb for ashes to allow cemetery users to place ashes in a tomb located in a prominent place in the cemetery.

Distinctive Graves

Reus cemetery has a large number of distinctive graves, in terms of either the history behind them or their artistic merit.

  • General Prim's Mausoleum.

General Prim's remains were brought to Reus in 1971. A Neoclassical-style mausoleum was built for them.

  • Joan Rebull's Grave.

The remains of the sculptor from Reus Joan Rebull rest beneath the sculpture Els Gitanets , by Rebull himself. It portrays the sculptor with two childhood friends.

  • The Margenat Family Chapel.

The interior of this chapel, though it is little-known, was designed by the Art Nouveau architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

  • The Pratdesaba Tomb.

Created in 1894 by the architect Granell i Manresa.

  • Pantheon of the Illustrious Sons.

This is a pantheon restored by the Mas Carandell training workshop scheme. It is currently used to provide a tomb for any illustrious sons and daughters of the town who wish to be interred there.

  • Chapel of the Heroes of El Morell and Vilallonga.

In 1838 a group of over 100 young people from Reus died in a Carlist ambush. This event had such a great impact on Reus society that in the new cemetery built 30 years later a chapel was constructed in their honour.

This chapel was also used during the Spanish Civil War for some burials. In 2004 Gesfursa completed the refurbishment and reconstruction of the stones which had been damaged when the chapel collapsed during works on the land next to the cemetery .
